Any time I am on a long day ride or a vacation ride, finding something to eat between meals can be quite the challenge. Our options are usually limited to the Gas station convenience store. You’d have to look really hard to find something that is half decent. We’re also more inclined to pick the bad stuff as we’re tired. A bag of chips, chocolate bar, or some candy is going to give you a quick burst of energy, but that is it. You will be fighting the clock as these snacks are tough for your body to digest.

So why are nuts a more logical choice? Here are seven reasons;

The first reason is simple. They are a whole, simple ingredient. You are eating something that is completely natural.

Second, Protein! Give your body a needed protein boost, it is also key in making you feel fuller.

Third, you’re getting a good amount of Vitamin E, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin K.

Fourth, Nuts contain Antioxidants and Phytosterols. Antioxidants are natural detoxifiers and Phytosterols are well known to help keep cholesterol down.

Fifth, They taste great. Each nut has its own unique flavour.

Sixth, They contain a good variety of minerals which include; Calcium, Copper, Magnesium, Manganese, Folate, Zinc and Thiamin.

Seventh, Fat! Our brains are primarily made of saturated fats and nuts are full of healthy fats to help our brains stay focused.

The nutritional profile of nuts will beat out most snacks and they are very convenient. The only drawback is most nuts available to buy are roasted. This reduces the health benefits of the nuts by destroying the fats. Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids can become inflammatory and carcinogenic if they are roasted heavily. Avoid these if possible.

Next time you’re looking for a snack at the gas station ask yourself why your bike gets premium gas and you go for the stuff that is barely considered food.
